A peacock rendered in scarlet and gold against a blue crystalline field. In many cultures the peacock is read as a symbol of renewal and composure; the pale crystal base is chosen for its quiet, luminous character.

From a few metres the work holds as one presence — colour, animal, gilt. Closer, the surface changes. Thick oil throws a small shadow; raw crystal sits in the paint, not printed on it.

Real crystal, set by hand
Raw clear quartz and aquamarine are set into the lower field of the painting while the surface is still workable. They sit above the paint, not printed on it.

Impasto oil and gold leaf
Oil laid thick enough to hold its own ridges and cast shadow inside the frame, with gold leaf applied by hand over the ground and burnished back.

Gilt frame, already fitted
Each work arrives framed in gilt wood, chosen to sit with the gold in the painting. Nothing to specify, nothing to have framed after it arrives.

Painted to your size
Each of the five sizes is painted individually rather than scaled from one canvas, so the crystal field and the gold stay in proportion at every size.

About the artist
Nina Zhou is the founder of FAIRYSING. Two decades of practice in crystal artistry led her to a form of her own — bespoke crystal art paintings, in which raw gemstones are set directly into a painted surface rather than applied on top of it.
She works with rare stones sourced worldwide, on commission, one client at a time. Each piece is built to hold an Eastern sense of composition against a contemporary Western sense of luxury.
